When embryo transfer is used to obtain multiple pregnant recipient mares from a single mare, repeated insemination and transfer attempts can lead to reduced fertility. This translates into higher costs per pregnancy, due to missed heats, uterine treatments or unsuccessful flushes, for example. This can sometimes be a source of frustration and financial loss. In fact, as the number of gestations increases, so does the cost per gestation.
Conversely, oocyte puncture followed by ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) works differently.
Frozen embryo production costs are spread over the number of gestations obtained. Here is a comparative analysis of the cost of obtaining two gestations via ICSI versus the cost of the first gestation obtained by embryo transfer.
Oocyte puncture + ICSI
